Leave A Trail, Burnt Heart

I should never have compared you to my boyfriend. You knew that.

You knew you would never want me to even have the thought in my head,
You and I were never in love.

If I had held you one more night, I would have ruined my life.
I begin to see now that that was always the line.

No-one who stays one night was ever meant to stay more,
Nor say more,
Nor sit in a cafe discussing the parts of our hearts left sore.

Somewhere between friends, and a memory of skin.
A memory excluding him.

I know my life is with him,
I know my home is with him.

But you and I, we wrote ourselves into a romcom script.
And in the climax of the film,
The scene got clipped.

Mistakes, burning skin. Thoughts fleeting, forgiven. Back to him.

We walked out of the cafe.

We didn't say goodbye in a flurry of snow, we just -

Just went home.
